Longarm Grand is Going Home!
After a couple month stay, we finally have a driver. On this buildup we installed
Sunray 9 inch axles, an Atlas transfer case, 10 to 12 inches of lift, 37" MTR's,
an AGR rock ram, different rock sliders, mounted a 37" spare in the back, clearanced
fenderwells to stuff 37's, and installed heavy duty tie rods.
The most time consuming part of this particular buildup was the rock ram install.
Besides the weeks of waiting for the parts, AGR does not make a rock ram setup for
a WJ. Sooooo we have to put our own together.
For the steeering gear I decided on a TJ unit. In order to mount this, the frame
rail has to be rebuilt to inset the steering gear into the frame rail. This was
accomplished with 1/4" plate. We used a drop pitman arm from a 1979 F150. --

To hook up the sector shaft we grafted a YJ lower shaft to the WJ upper shaft. The
power steering lines were already compatible. For the pump I had AGR put together
the best remote resevoir pump they could build. Basically it is a Super "P" pump
without the resevoir attached. A custom bracket was made to mount the pump to the
drivers side of the motor. Ther is not alot of room here. Relocation of the K&N
fipk setup was also required. The remote resevoir was mounted back off of the firewall.
A longer serpentine belt was installed along with an extra idler pulley to facilitate
routing. So that finishes the underhood install.
The ram itself pushes off of the axle housing. Shane overbuilt a mount using 1/4"
plate for the housing bracket and used the AGR bracket for the tie rod bracket.
Pay close attention to how you hook up the hoses. This WJ also has the hydraulic
cooling fan. There is a myriad of hoses needed to complete this install. Installation
of a large power steering cooler is a must.
So does it work? Yes. You can jam one of the front tires next to a big rock and
it will physically move the jeep or rock sideways. It will move an Eagle Talon sideways
too. Hope you enjoy the pictures, see you next month.
